A Doula provides physical and emotional support throughout pregnancy, birth & postpartum
Each pregnancy and birth is a unique experience. Many first-times moms did not have the birthing experience that they wished to have. A Doula will discuss your previous journey to find the things you liked about the experience & the things you didn't, then plan for ways to avoid the same outcome.
The Cochrane Database Systematic Review (2017) states "Continuous support in labor may improve a number of outcomes for both mother and baby, and no adverse outcomes have been identified." Doula support has been linked to higher APGAR scores and a higher rate of satisfaction reported by mothers overall (Sauls, 2002). Studies have also show Doula support to reduce cesareans by 28-56% for full term births (Hodnett et al., 2012 & Kozhimannil et al., 2016), and the overall length of labor by 25%
Through hands-on, in home care, Postpartum doulas are available as a resource to ask questions & provide information on the care of your new baby and yourself in the postpartum period. A Postpartum Doula's job is to create a safe-space for you to feel comfortable and cared for as you embark on this new journey. You will receive assistance with newborn care, breastfeeding support, light housekeeping, food preparation, and overall support during this time.
A Postpartum Doula provides support both physical and emotional during the first few weeks after birth as you transition into this new role.
